Petra is located in the south of Jordan. It is so far away from the Jordanian capital, Amman. The Nabataeans built Petra. They were an Arab tribe that lived in the desert. Petra was built in the year 312 BC, and the Nabataeans made it their capital. In the ancient world, Petra was important for commercial activity in the region. Traders used to stop in this city. Because of that, Petra became very rich and powerful. The city of Petra was discovered by a Swiss traveler. Petra is called the "Rose City". This is because its buildings are built of rose stones. Also, Petra is called the "Lost City" because it remained unknown to the world for a long time before it was discovered. The city of Petra has many places to visit. Such as: the Siq gorge, the Treasury, the Royal Tombs, the Great Temple, and the Monastery. Petra was named a UNESCO World Heritage site. In addition to that, Petra was chosen as one of the Seven Wonders of the World in 2007. This indicates the importance and beauty of this city in the world.
