Drugs: The Scourge of Society

Every year, on the 26th of June, the world celebrates the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. This day is celebrated because drug addiction is a global issue. Many countries in the world suffer from it, and it causes them social, economic, and health problems. In this essay, I will address everything we need to know about drugs, to confront this issue, and try to get rid of it.

Drugs are toxic substances. They destroy the mind and body of the person who takes them. Drugs cause addiction, which means the inability to stop using these substances. Drug use is illegal, and it has many causes, such as peer pressure, living among addicts, emptiness, unemployment, boredom, and family problems. Additionally, some people become addicted to drugs after taking them once, believing that they will not harm them. And this is not the only negative effect of drugs. They also affect the health of the person who abuse them by causing sleep problems and many diseases. On the other hand, drugs cause social problems, such as family conflict, ignorance, poverty, illiteracy, and the spread of crime. Eliminating the drug problem requires serious efforts from society, its institutions, and citizens. There are many ways that can help solve this problem, such as: launching awareness campaigns in schools and universities, opening addiction treatment centers, providing job opportunities for young people, and strengthening family relationships.

It is worth mentioning that many drug users are teenagers and young adults. This highlights the necessity of taking care of these groups in particular, and protecting them from drugs and their dangers. Drug abuse is a real crisis that must be eliminated because it harms all groups in society. We have to face it seriously, and help drug addicts, through giving them a second chance in society.
